Rui Miguel Monteiro is a Portuguese architectural designer whose work is shaped by the energy of informal urban settings and a deep commitment to building stronger, more inclusive communities.
His creative perspective draws from a diverse range of influences, including Soviet Brutalism, African history, traditional Chinese furniture, Nordic modularity in design, conversions of historical buildings, the Japanese Metabolist movement, and Mediterranean vernacular architecture.
As a researcher, Rui explores lightweight architectural systems in advanced structures, the complex relationship between rapid urbanisation and sustainability, and how the desertification of built environments contributes to community fragmentation.
In 2020, he founded R3M Studio Ltd, a 'young' and dynamic practice collaborating with students, designers, architects, building contractors, environmentalists, artists, curators, actors and musicians from around the world.
"I've had the opportunity to collaborate with and share experiences with people from different cultures, working on diverse assignments. Each project was and is a unique challenge, but also an opportunity to evolve"
